The current energy landscape and the long-term challenges that the Mediterranean region faces in its transition to sustainable energy will be the focus of the panel and it will address the main difficulties that the area will face along the energy transition journey. These challenges include the funding of the transition of the traditional energy system to low-carbon energy sources, the capability to scale and integrate emerging technologies and the development of sustainable energy policies and regulations. In addition, the panel will explore the role of international cooperation, investment and geopolitical dynamics in promoting a stable and resilient energy future.

The panel will explore the main levers of decarbonisation for energy technology solution providers, highlighting the challenges and business opportunities in the medium and long term. The session will examine past security incidents impacting offshore installations, success stories, and the importance of Structural Integrity Management (SIM) for maintaining sustainable offshore operations.

Topics include experimental setups for pressurized hydrogen releases, fracture resistance testing for offshore pipelines, and the qualification of materials for subsea hydrogen pipelines. Additionally, subsea dispersion modeling of hydrogen releases, fatigue and fracture mechanics in pipeline design, and engineering assessments for hydrogen environments will be discussed. The session will also explore best practices for transport and fitness-for-purpose evaluations, including IMR planning for new and repurposed hydrogen pipelines.

Natural gas will remain a key component of the energy mix in the coming decades. Historically, it has served as a bridge between the southern shores of the Mediterranean and energy consumption in Europe. The infrastructure landscape is evolving, strengthening the existing network with increased flexibility provided by LNG plants. Future developments in the supply chain must align with national and European policies and regulatory frameworks.
